NSF Certified Class II Type A2 Biosafety Cabinet

A biosafety cabinet, also known as a biological safety cabinet or microbiological safety cabinet, is an enclosed and ventilated workspace used in laboratories to safely handle materials contaminated or potentially contaminated with pathogens. Its primary purpose is to protect laboratory workers and the environment from these harmful microorganisms.

The cabinet ensures safety by filtering all exhaust air through HEPA filters before releasing it, effectively removing bacteria and viruses. This differs from laminar flow clean benches, which direct unfiltered exhaust air towards the user and are not suitable for handling pathogenic agents. Similarly, a biosafety cabinet is distinct from fume hoods, as the latter doesn't offer the same level of environmental protection provided by HEPA filtration.

There are different classes of biosafety cabinets:

  • Class I cabinets offer personnel and environmental protection but not product protection, potentially leading to sample contamination due to inward airflow. They are often used for enclosing specific equipment or procedures that might produce aerosols.

  • Class II cabinets provide both sample and environmental protection as the makeup air is also HEPA-filtered. They come in different types (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1) based on specific requirements defined by standards.

As for the Ai 2 Ft Class II Type A2 biosafety cabinet features, it includes various specifications such as NSF certification, suitability for COVID-19 specimen handling, a motorized front glass viewing window with optional foot switch, dual HEPA filters with life indicators, UV light with a life indicator, waterproof in-chamber power sockets, large LCD display, easy-to-clean stainless steel chamber, and other functionalities for user convenience and safety.

Steps before and after using the biosafety cabinet involve closing the front glass panel, initiating UV light for 30 minutes for disinfection (users should vacate the room during this period), adjusting the glass panel to the recommended opening height while turning on air circulation for 10 minutes during operation, and finally, closing the glass panel and activating UV light for an additional 30 minutes for decontamination after use.

 

IMPORTANT GUIDELINES USING A BSC

  • No flammable and explosive substances (Building up of flammable material may cause an internal fire or explosion)
  • No volatile chemicals (May cause damage to HEPA filters to the point where it allows particles to leak through)
  • No toxic chemicals or materials (May reach room occupants)
  • No open flame (Will disrupts air flow patterns)
  • Minimal use (10mL or less) of decontaminant, such as 70% isopropyl or ethyl alcohol is allowed.
  • We recommend using the following for disinfecting the surfaces of a BSC, depending on the agent to be controlled: Sodium hypochlorite (bleach), Ilodophors (Wescodyne), Phenolics (Hilphene, Vespene) and Quaternary ammonium compounds (Conflikt, EndbacII)
  • If gaseous, vaporized or aerosolized chemicals must be generated in a BSC, you should assure yourself that the quantity being generated will NOT cause a flammable or toxic risk.
