Common examples include businesses buying for resale (with a resale certificate), government agencies, schools and universities, and qualifying nonprofit organizations. Eligibility is set by your state, so the certificate you provide tells us what you qualify for.

A valid state-issued resale or exemption certificate for the state where you're claiming exemption. If you buy across multiple states, a multi-state certificate (such as an MTC or SST form) can cover several at once. You'll upload these directly in the Avalara portal.

Most certificates are reviewed within a few business days. Once approved, your exemption is saved to your account so it applies to future orders without re-submitting each time.

If you were charged sales tax on a recent order before your exemption was on file, contact our team and we'll help sort out a credit or refund where applicable.

It means we're not currently required to collect sales tax there, so you won't be charged tax at checkout. Depending on your state, you may still be responsible for reporting use tax on your own. When in doubt, check with your tax advisor.
